Human Sexuality Starts Next Week

Lots of kids haven't handed in their human sexuality forms.  We are missing 18 from our class of 30, so if you haven't seen the form come home there will be a school messenger later today with the form attached.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes per night. Daily Learning: Daily 5 continued as usual. We just finished our persuasive writing unit, and in math we looked at volume of 3D shapes this week, culminating in students building a sculpture out of base ten blocks and calculating the volume that their sculpture takes up, and it's value if it were made out of precious metals-we had a sculpture called gold mountain that would have cost almost 7,000,000 if it were to be actually made out of gold. Today we learned why Mentos and Diet Coke isn't a chemical reaction even though it lets off carbon dioxide and baking soda and vinegar is a chemical reaction because it lets off carbon dioxide.

Loonies for Literacy

EducationMatters | Loonies for Literacy

Text-to-donate is now live for EducationMatters’ Loonies for Literacy fundraising campaign.

Parents and community supporters can text LITERACY to 30333 and donate $5. To direct your donation to Beddington Heights School, simply text LITERACY followed by the school’s short code: BEDDH

This system-wide fundraising event was initiated to help schools purchase the resources their students need most. Every dollar raised in-school will be matched up to $51k by community partners.

Funds raised throughout the campaign will be used for:

  • Books for school libraries
  • Digital resources such as reading apps and e-books
  • Early learning resources
  • Decodable texts

Parents and community supporters may also use a school’s Loonies for Literacy fundraising page

LIT CON

Today we were able to join the Calgary Public Library's LITCON.  We heard from Winston Pei, an artist who is interested in and creates art using books as an object to make art with, not only to read.  Tomorrow we are going to hear from an author who will be introducing the way that she organizes her ideas to turn them into a narrative story using a thing that she calls the Story Spine.

Hats On

It was nice to see all the hats on for our hats on for mental health day on May the 4th. Updates from Room 17: Yesterday we had some guests from Sir John A. Macdonald School come to Beddington, the grade 9 Concert Band and the SJAM Jazz Band! the whole school seemed to love bopping along to the songs from the SJAM students.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes per night. Daily Learning: Daily 5 continued as usual. We are currently working on persuasive writing in writing, and in math we are finishing looking at measurement, today trying to show our understanding of when to use mm, cm, dm, m, and km and how to convert between those units.

We are currently working on persuasive writing in writing, and in math we are looking at measurement, today trying to decide when to use mm, cm, dm, m, and km to measure different objects and distances. Tomorrow we have guests from SJAM's grade 9 band and Jazz band coming to the school in the afternoon to perform for our students! sjsterne@cbe.ab.ca lmwiens@cbe.ab.ca

April 25 2022

Homework: Read for 20 minutes per night. Daily Learning: Daily 5 continued as usual. In science the students designed a scientific test to observe dissolving. Students were asked to find a way to make the life saver dissolve faster. Many students were surprised that vinegar was no better at dissolving life savers than water was. We are currently working on reflection in writing, and in math we started a week long project that involves budgeting for an imaginary camping trip that involves adding and subtracting with decimals, and multiplying double digit numbers in order to make sure that students will be able to make enough money mowing lawns to afford all the camping gear. sjsterne@cbe.ab.ca lmwiens@cbe.ab.ca

Surface Tension

We ran a lab today that showed the power of the surface tension of water, we started with a cup of water filled all the way to the rim, and tested how many paperclips we could add to the water before it would overflow out of the cup.

The biggest guess was that we could place 35 paperclips into the cup before it would overflow and we were shocked that it too 89 paperclips before the water flowed over the edge.  Along the way kids observed that the bubble over the top of the cup was so large that it was bending the light allowing us to see the paperclips under the edge of the cup while looking across the edge of the cup.

We then floated a paperclip on the top of the bubble of water to demonstrate in a different way the power of surface tension.

Finally we added a little bit of dish soap and saw the surface tension lower so much that the floating paperclip sank to the bottom of the cup and the bubble of water over the rim of the cup spilled over the edge.
